Climate change is undoubtedly one of the most significant challenges facing our world today. With rising temperatures, changes in weather patterns, melting ice caps, and disappearing species, the evidence is hard to ignore. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by such a big issue, but as students, you can take action towards creating a sustainable future. At SFS Guwahati, we believe that cultivating environmental consciousness among students is the first step to facilitating significant change.
The blog will discuss what climate change is, why it matters, and most importantly, how students can help combat climate change with simple actions and lifestyle choices.
What Is Climate Change?
Climate change describes the long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns. Climate change is caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and emissions from industrial processes. These human activities release greenhouse gases (GHGs) including carbon dioxide and methane, into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gas emissions trap heat in the atmosphere and change the climate of the planet. Climate change impacts include:
- Increasingly frequent heatwaves, droughts, and flooding
- Rising sea levels
- Food and water insecurity
- Threats to wildlife and ecosystems
- Practice the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
- Save Energy
- Go Green with Transportation
- Plant Trees and Maintain Greenery
- Spread Awareness
- Use Water Wisely
