UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE CHANGE: WHAT STUDENTS CAN DO TO HELP

Climate change is undoubtedly one of the most significant challenges facing our world today. With rising temperatures, changes in weather patterns, melting ice caps, and disappearing species, the evidence is hard to ignore. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by such a big issue, but as students, you can take action towards creating a sustainable future. At SFS Guwahati, we believe that cultivating environmental consciousness among students is the first step to facilitating significant change. The blog will discuss what climate change is, why it matters, and most importantly, how students can help combat climate change with simple actions and lifestyle choices. What Is Climate Change? Climate change describes the long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns. Climate change is caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and emissions from industrial processes. These human activities release greenhouse gases (GHGs) including carbon dioxide and methane, into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gas emissions trap heat in the atmosphere and change the climate of the planet. Climate change impacts include:
  • Increasingly frequent heatwaves, droughts, and flooding
  • Rising sea levels
  • Food and water insecurity
  • Threats to wildlife and ecosystems
Understanding climate change impacts is the first step for students in becoming responsible and aware global citizens. Why Should Students Care? Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. The actions taken by the younger generation will determine the health of our planet in the years to come. Developing climate literacy empowers students to make informed choices, demand accountability, and inspire their communities to adopt more sustainable practices. At SFS Guwahati, our curriculum and school programs often integrate environmental education, encouraging students to participate in eco-friendly initiatives and green projects. What Can Students Do to Help? Here are some practical ways students can help combat climate change:
  1. Practice the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Cut down on single-use plastics, reuse school supplies, and recycle paper, bottles, and electronics. Small changes can create a large impact over time.
  1. Save Energy
Switch off lights, fans, and devices when not in use. Use energy-efficient bulbs and opt for natural light during the day.
  1. Go Green with Transportation
Walk, cycle, or use public transport instead of personal vehicles whenever possible. Reducing carbon emissions is one of the most effective ways to fight climate change.
  1. Plant Trees and Maintain Greenery
Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Participate in plantation drives and take care of plants at home or in school.
  1. Spread Awareness
Talk to friends, family, and community members about the importance of climate action. Conduct presentations, campaigns, or exhibitions on sustainability.
  1. Use Water Wisely
Turn off taps when not in use, fix leaks, and use water-efficient appliances. Saving water helps reduce the energy needed for water treatment and supply. A Greener Future Starts with You Understanding climate change isn’t just a science lesson—it's a call to action. By making small but impactful changes in their daily lives, students can become climate champions and inspire others to do the same. At SFS Guwahati, we are committed to cultivating environmentally responsible citizens who are ready to take on global challenges with courage and compassion.
